On the fifteenth of March at 05:35 my Grandfather passed away peacefully in Moorehall nursing home. Granda had struggled with Alzheimer’s Disease for the best part of 9 years as well as Parkinsons’ Disease and it is both of those things that eventually led to his passing.

The reason I am writing about this is to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s Disease has many forms but is usually very aggressive and most common in people over the age of 55. It could be described as the ‘decomposition of the brain’ and leads to many side effects such as reduced mobility, incontinence, aggressive or agitated moods, loss of speech and eventually death as a result of extreme muscular dystrophy.

Granda had all of these things and more, but he was always very comfortable in Moorehall and I cannot express how lucky and blessed we were to have gotten 4 and a half good years with him that we probably wouldn’t have under different circumstances.

In many ways I believe that Alzheimer’s Disease is just as bad as Cancer but I struggle to understand why it doesn’t get as much recognition as the latter does in the public eye? Alzheimer’s Disease is a very real threat to the elderly people of Ireland and could potentially effect millions of people across the World like it has affected me. From personal experience, in the last few weeks I prayed that my Grandfather would be taken peacefully as it was clear that he was in distress. Thankfully my prayers were answered and he passed away very peacefully, leaving behind the pain and suffering he had fought through for many years.

I can’t stress how important it is for people to know about Alzheimer’s Disease and what it is capable of. As a family, we were very lucky to have gotten Granda into Moorehall nursing home and I hope that many more families like mine get the same chance with their Grandparent/s. God knows he is at rest now.

If you have any questions about Alzheimer’s Disease or for me about my experience with someone who has it, please don’t be afraid to ask. The more people that know about it the better.
