In the first semester of my second year at DKIT, we were asked to create a five-minute movie on whatever we wanted. Each student was asked to create a short synopsis of their movie which the lecturer then picked for the student to become the director of. My short movie ‘Torpor’ was picked and I as its director.
Torpor follows the story of Ita, a woman suffering with the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. It switches between Ita when she was a younger woman to Ita as she is now, an older lady with full-blown Alzheimer’s disease. I chose to do a story based around mental health and Alzheimer’s disease as both are quite close to my home. My Grandfather suffers greatly with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Dementia. Because of these diseases, my Grandfather does not know who any of us are. It has been hard on all of us as a family but I was so proud to be able to put my skills to good use and create a short movie about it.
I had the honor of working with some of the best team mates anyone could have asked for: Bastiaan Jager who worked on capturing the film’s audio. Eimer Mc Phillips who worked on lighting and storyboards and Anne Le Tallec, an Erasmus student who helped Eimer with the storyboards and acted as assistant director. I feel that together as a group we created a really moving short story, hopefully bringing awareness to the diseases I’ve mentioned above.
